How to tell when an important sounding email that I'm supposed to forward is legitimate or a hoax. 5 Signs that an email is a hoax 1. Urgency You'll see lots of exclamation points and words in all caps, like URGENT!!!! and WARNING!!!!! 2. "Tell all your friends" There will always be a request that you share this "important information" by forwarding this message to everybody in your email address book or to as many friends as you can. 3. "This isn't a hoax" The message may include sincere premise like "My neighbor, who works for Microsoft, just received this warning so I know it's true. He asked me to pass it along." 4. Dire consequences The text will predict dire consequences if you don't act immediately — a missing child won't be found or someone won't be able to die happy. 5. History Look for lost of >>>>>> marks in the left margin. These indicate that people who fell for the hoax have forwarded the message countless times before it reached you. When in doubt, do your homework at www.hoaxbusters.org, www.snopes.com, or www.scambusters.org I still struggle with good ways to incorporate wordle into the classroom. But, I think I may have found one. I used 2 different Web 2.0 tools - primary wall and wordle in my 2nd grade technology class. Primary Wall is a super easy sticky note website that requires no registration. Wordle creates a word cloud from the text that you enter. So before beginning my unit on the Internet, I had students go to a Primary Wall that I had created and type in all the words they could think of that had to do with the Internet. Our goal was to try and hit every letter of the alphabet, but we didn't quite make that. I then took all of the words and typed them into Wordle to create a word cloud. By doing this it showed which words students were most familiar with on the Internet. I then posted the wordle on my website and as a class we discussed what we saw on the wordle and why some words were bigger than others. It gave me as the teacher a better idea as to how much the students knew and how much material I needed to cover. After teaching the lessons, I plan to repeat this same activity and see how the wordle changes. I'm hoping that the words grow and that some words no longer make the list and that some new ones do. So my wordle actually becomes my assessment of the unit.

IKM-Manning Middle School will be having a Technology Open-House on Monday, April 25th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Manilla Just got done with doing a VOKI.com project with 2nd graders. The kids enjoyed the project and they turned out pretty good for the first run. A voki is a talking voice avatar or character. http://www.voki.com
For my project I put the students into groups of 2 and each group was given a keyboarding topic to talk about with their voki. Things we discovered along the way: 1. Need to have a voki account to save your vokis. I created a gmail account to use with this project and everyone signed in with the same account. 2. Firefox works better than Safari. 3. Recording with the built-in recorder in voki wasn't always dependable so we used Audacity to record our voices and then we uploaded the mp3 files to our voki account. 4. If students weren't finished with their voki but needed to save, I simply had them pick the turkey day default voice and then publish so they wouldn't have to recreate their character. 5. I embedded the vokis into my website using the custom html feature, but you could also just link to voki.com if you wanted.
